The Long Slog

In a cafe with The Girl on Monday, it struck me that my theory about 2010 – that it would see me paring down and focusing on one or very few projects instead of 2009’s scattershot selection – has managed to be entirely accurate while still quite a shock.

Getting into projects that won’t draw to a close for at least another 18months is very difficult, especially with the added fear of making them, if not exactly profitable, not too costly. I’m seeing it around me too, as more and more friends reach points in projects or businesses where The Long Slog of ‘being in the thing’ is taking over the apparently boundless energy of ‘creating the thing’.

“As any inventor will tell you,” producer Dennis Bovell says in Ben Thompson’s Ways of Hearing, “once you’ve invented something, you want to invent something else.”
